sophia - you're reaching a point where naps are getting more difficult and morning wake-up's are getting earlier and earlier - this morning, i was greeted with this picnic that you had set up -- all this was prepared by 7am.

you are showing signs of some really weird OCD-type behavior -- you can spend up to 15 minutes just shaking blanket after blanket over and over again to perfectly lay it down as flat as can be. it's pretty funny to watch but i am always curious to know what's in your little brain as you shake the same blanket over and over again..

your drawings are still mostly vertical lines up and down with colors all mixed up till they turn brown. once in awhile, you stretch yourself and draw a circle.

however, you've managed to use these chopsticks eamo bought you from korea... you eat all of your dinners with these things... it's pretty impressive.

you are so sweet with your baby bro and have been an excellent big sis.

Lucas,
On Tuesday, your teacher told me that you finally rolled over. I assumed it was from belly to back, like your sister and most infants start with. But what I come to find is that it's actually back to belly -- maybe it's because of your size but for some reason, this seems to be easier for you. and you made it easy not to compare against your sister -- although your sister was flipping over at 3 months, i don't know when she learned to go back back to belly -- so we'll say that you're even.

you also had your first food - rice cereal. it was messy but you seem to like it. After a week of rice cereal, we moved on to avocado which made you gag so i quickly moved on to carrots which you LOVE. you are a champ eater -- not that i had any doubts, but you can eat your fair share of the orange stuff.

you're still waking up 1-3 times every night. i wonder when you'll stop doing that.

baby lucas,

although you're baby, you are off the charts. at your 4 month visit, you weighed 19.3 pounds -- as big as some one-year olds. You're so heavy that we already switched your car seat from the infant one to the convertible.

You just finished your first 3 weeks of daycare and have fought off your first ear infection and second cold. you may have been in some major pain, but you also slept through the night for the first time!! you're back to full health and are waking up again, but thank you for a couple of nights of good sleep.

this week, you also got your first taste of rice cereal of which you are not a fan of.

however, prune juice is yummy and finally did the trick after being constipated for 1 week.

and we did set the date for circumcision II. we are praying that everything goes smoothly 7/26.

lucas - although we are relieved you are a healthy baby boy, you've had your fair share of issues -- yeast infections, bacterial infections, eczema, and more...and of course your port wine stains that made me cry taking you home from the hospital. you were born with birthmarks called port wine stains (because of their color) all over your body - your left arm, your right leg, your back, your shoulder, and your groin. the doctor said we should be relieved that there's nothing on your face and that you are a boy and for that, yes, we are thankful, but i still wish you didn't have to deal with these stains covering your body- birthmarks that will be exposed when you wear a t-shirt or shorts - when you go swimming or when it's hot -- we've talked and met with tons of doctors to learn what the cause is, what might happen in the future, the treatment options, etc. last month, we did a test on your arm and leg to see if laser treatment might lighten your port wine stains. we revisit the doctor in 4 months to see if we'll take the next step of treating your whole body. based on what i can tell, it doesn't look like the laser treatment did anything, which makes me sad. but at the same time, the birthmarks are starting to look natural on you -- if only we knew how much these birthmarks would affect you in the future? no matter what we decide to do, mommy and daddy promise to raise you with strong self-confidence. the only unknown is that we can't control what mean kids might say -- i wonder what you would want us to do when you're 17...

the next health issue is your circumcision. your circumcision was not perfect, and you ended up getting an infection b/c of it. the urologist is recommending that we re-circumcise your penis which breaks my heart because i don't want you to have to go through that yet again. mommy and daddy decided to revisit the issue in a couple of months to see if you get more infections. the doctor says there are social impact issues, just like your port wine stains.. yet again, more social impact issues... i wonder why God has put so many obstacles in your way... part of me thinks that you are going to be someone who does something amazing because you will face so many adversities. i know that these things will not break you, but make you stronger. i hope we make the decisions that you support, when you're older...

dear friends & family:

the pae blog is taking a new direction, inspired by a google commercial. the blog was originally created for grandma and grandpa kim to keep in touch with their grandchildren, but thanks to the amazing invention of skype, photo updates aren't necessary anymore. SO... this blog will now be dedicated and written for sophia and lucas to reminisce on major milestones and decisions made that impact their future lives.

May 11, 2011: the next transition...

T-1 day till mommy goes back to work which means sophia, you go to school and wake up an hour earlier. Lucas, you will start this new transition of going to school on Monday. I've been trying to prepare you for this new transition with semi-success.

- bottle feeding: you are now a master at this

- nap time with no swaddle: you can now go down pretty easily without a swaddle but you don't sleep for more than 40 minutes this way -- right now, you're actually crying your eyes out b/c you only slept for 30 minutes and i want you to be able to have one solid nap today

- sleeping at night: you are OK at this now -- you still wake up at least once during the night which is a huge improvement over what you were doing 2 weeks ago, but it still makes mommy exhausted.

what am i most scared of? i am not looking forward to you being sleep deprived during the day or getting colds and weird-named illnesses from daycare. but i am most scared that you will not got the attention you deserve and that you will feel like i've deserted you. after spending all day together and transitioning to 30 minutes in the morning and an hour at night, i'm afraid you'll miss your family. but i know this transition back to work will be harder for me than it is for you. here's to finding a new normal way of life, yet again...

this past weekend, you got your first haircut. you were the youngest customer the salon ever had. daddy was disappointed with the cut, saying it was too short, so he didn't leave a tip. he also discovered that you have daddy's hair and will have to mimic his hairstyle since he knows what looks best. i think you still look cute and at least now, your hair doesn't get stuck in the velcro of your bib anymore.

to my dear baby lucas (AKA #2),
'tho you are a difficult baby, i still love you. 'tho you do not sleep at night or during the day, i still love you. 'tho i may be extremely frustrated with you, i love you. and one day, when you learn to sleep and you become a well-rested and happy baby, i will tell you how much i loved you to endure these difficult days.

mommy is feeling exhausted as lucas makes it through his 15th week of life. she goes back to work next week and is feeling anxious about working with a haze of cloudiness constantly filling up her head, but it has to happen some time, so here's to our newest upcoming transition to daycare & work.

below are a few of the latest adventures of #2 who refuses to sleep during the day for more than 40 minutes and likes to play a nightly game of will i sleep tonight or not.

daddy & lucas after a major poop accident that got all over baby and daddy (don't worry, daddy's wearing pants).

he may have the title of 'little' brother, but this guy is not little anymore.
the infant carseat is a tight fit and way too heavy to carry around.

we've discovered new toys that #2 can use.

sophia may not have letter recognition down, but if you give her anything in a song, she can nail it. nursery rhymes are yesterday's tune. grandma has her learning korean via song. she learned this one last night over dinner. mommy and daddy don't even know all the words.

dad was hoping for a 1/11/11 baby but baby lucas decided to arrive a bit later on 1/17/11 (1 day after his due date). he's already taking after mommy who likes to be just a 'little bit' late. and although he was late, mom's epidural worked this time and lucas arrived after 4 good pushes.

sophia loves her baby brother but has her transition moments which so far, include:
1) talking like a baby ("hi bae brotha. i a baby") but only when she's around mommy and daddy
2) crazy loud crying fits when it's time to go to bed and she can't see mommy or daddy
3) outright refusal to go to bed even when it's way past her bedtime
4) crazy loud crying fits if anyone takes away or touches anything that is deemed her's (this includes any type of food or toy)

somehow our baby sophia has magically turned into a big girl

year in review

the paes have been negligent in updating this blog -- our sincerest apologies. technical difficulties, busy schedules, and #2 on its way (any day now) kept us from sharing our updates. So here goes a quick look at the last year (since June) and a promise to keep 2011 more up to date than 2010.

started the summer with a family trip to hawaii with mommy's side - i did awesome on the plane and had tons of fun in the sun. mommy and daddy felt relieved to finally be able to travel with their big girl without much drama.

this summer was also our first summer of gardening. daddy made us a planter box where we planted strawberries and peppers. we also had a bigger patch (the "pae patch") down the street where we learned that we planted too much lettuce and cucumbers, cauliflower and cabbage get really dirty, tomatoes are fragile, and we LOVE strawberries.

in the fall, we picked our fair share of blueberries. this has become an annual tradition. I ended up eating more than I picked, but we're still eating blueberries from this fun adventure.

the summer/ fall was full of friends and family visiting from all over.

the pae kids (we've actually added 2 more since this picture was taken). although they live in the seattle area, it's always a treat to hang out.

my friend M from boston came for a visit. although we never met each other, we became fast friends as our mommies are kindred spirits.

my cousins (actually daddy's cousin and aunt) dropped by on a road trip. they were driving from LA to Philly.

i love playing with my friends S&S. we're saying cheese with our baby dolls who we love. a few months after this pic was taken, we all have real baby brothers that joined our families.

i started ballet and tap class and LOVE wearing tutus and the shoes, but did not love listening to the teacher. so after 6 weeks of progressively worse listening, mommy and daddy decided to postpone the rest of my classes till i'm a little bit older. but i still wear my tutu whenever i can and when mommy asks me what i want to be when i grow up, i say "a ballerina and a froggy".

for halloween, mommy convinced me that i wanted to be dorothy from the wizard of oz since i already had the hair and the red shoes and target didn't have any cute "kitty cat" costumes (which is what i originally requested to be). daddy decided to join in on the fun and dressed up as an amazing tin man. i think mommy wants me to be dorothy every year from now on.

by thanksgiving, mommy was getting really big and i learned that baby brother would be joining our family soon. daddy wanted to capture the moment since we hardly have any pictures of my new baby brother growing in mommy's tummy.

thanksgiving was awesome. my eamo, grandma, grandpa and uncle miles came over and we had a blast!

a few weeks later, christmas came and 2010 came to an end.

- learned to count to 39

- identified my passion and gift for singing (i think i got this from daddy)

- grew a love for dancing

- learned to talk non-stop, in full sentences

mommy & daddy dressed me and my hair up like a bee for halloween.

i've been hanging out with friends and

am getting close to playing nice with them.

i still love slides & swings.

grandma came over for thanksgiving and

pretended to be my horse.

hanging out with old friends visting from texas.

we used to look like brother and sister when we were really little,

but not anymore.

my 2nd christmas was fun -- i loved ripping the wrapping paper open.

and i learned to say "WOW" when the paper ripped.

i was even more excited about my christmas dinner

at the end of the day, i'm still daddy's little girl.

the genie received a forward from a co-worker, the story goes...

ricky asked his father if he would run a 5-mile race with him for charity. his father, despite having a heart condition, said "yes." after they completed the race, the son asked his father to run a marathon with him. again, he said "yes." race after race, marathon after marathon, ricky's father continued to say "yes" and run with his son. then came the ironman triathalon-- a 2.4 mile ocean swim, a 112 mile bike ride, topped off with a full 26.2 mile marathon. ricky asked and his father said "yes."...

this summer is full of special days for my family. here's a quick snapshot of a few so far.

my auntie shannon graduated from the University of Washington.
i was so good for the entire 4.5 hour ceremony.

i LOVE my cousin briella. she's so nice to me.

I *LOVE* these bears on top of my changing table. As soon as mommy changes my diaper, I am mesmerized by the bears.

Bedtime Drama

Sophia is almost 4 weeks old and has given her parents quite a bit of bedroom drama. We have tried a number of different options and have documented them below to invite you into our bedroom soap opera. There is new drama daily.. stay tuned. For all those parents out there, don't worry, we are fully aware of all the SIDs risks.

Sophia the escape artist found a way to escape from all her blankets in her bassinet.

After a long night, mommy tried putting me in bed with her and I ended up taking over her entire half of the bed. Daddy didn't notice.

The next day, daddy made me this co-sleeper out of some left over cushions. It takes up 3/4 of the bed, but I sleep really well in it.

My favorite spot is on my boppy right after I finish eating.

Daddy got tired of putting back to bed and having me wake up, so he let me sleep on the couch with him.

Swing: Friend or Foe?

Uncle Austin & Aunt Terri got Sophia this super cool swing that swaddles and magically puts babies to sleep using the 5 senses. it's called a sweet peace. When we got the swing, we were both in awe and excited to use it on Sophia. But Sophia is not quite sure what to think of the swing yet and Jeannie thinks it's funny to capture her different reactions to the swing. We hope that one day she'll swing in peace like the kids in the commercial.

the genie started feeling "poopy" late friday night. the contractions starting increasing in intensity and frequency all day yesterday. she had a rough time trying to sleep through the intermittent pain. when the contractions started to get unbearable, we decided to swing by the hospital. we just didn't want to get sent back home.

sunday noon-ish:
she was 5cm dilated. we were here to stay...

sunday 2:30pm
7cm dilated. things are going well... epidural is in... but not having that much of an effect

sunday 4pm
re-administered the epidural... but still has plenty of sensation down there... a half-dosage of fentanyl was administered with nearly instant gratification.

now we wait...

A Season for everything
With our new home closing in 2 weeks, it's nice to look back and see how much has changed even in the short 4.5 months we've been here. This little carriage house has given us awesome shelter and seen us through a major time in our life...

T minus 28, 29, and 47 days

As many of you already know, we are T minus 28 days till baby Pae arrives, according to the doctors. Jeannie's feeling huger by the second, but we spent the gorgeous day outside at the outdoor olympic sculpture park

Lastly, we're T minus 47 days till we close on our CHICAGO Home! Thanks to everyone who prayed for us through all these big changes. We finally got an offer, but have a one month contingency for the buyers to secure financing. We'll keep you updated on this one, but we're just thankful that we can potentially close the Chicago chapter of our lives in 47 days.

don't get me wrong... i love seattle... and chicago was okay... but it'll take me a while to get to know seattle as well as i knew new york. now that i think about it... my 6 years in new york is probably the longest continuous stretch of time i've ever spent in one area (i moved around alot when i was young).

i had a love-hate relationship with new york. we've been through alot: 9/11, the 2003 black-out, subway strike, tons of concerts (strokes, white stripes, pharrell, cibo matto, moldy peaches, david crowder, n*sync-- i didn't say all of them were good), great friends, lots of different jobs in very different industries...

it was the best of times, it was the worst of times and sometimes it was just bizarre:

i wish i could've been around for this.

it was a great place to spend the bulk of my bachelorhood, but i'm very happy to be starting a family here in seattle.

Fishing in Mexico...

the genie and i saw this anonymous story posted on the wall of jimmy johns and liked it. hope you i-bankers aren't offended:

An American investment banker was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellow fin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them.

The fisherman replied, only a little while.

The American then asked why didn't he stay out longer and catch more fish?

The Mexican said he had enough to support his family's immediate needs.

The American then asked, "but what do you do with the rest of your time?"

The Mexican fisherman said, "I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos, I have a full and busy life."

Roboto may not be the richest or most patient man, but he is an excellent helper, companion, friend, and consoler. Over the past few weeks, Roboto has also reminded me that he is a man of many talents who never ceases to amaze me by how creative he really is.

As the "artist" in the family, Roboto refused to buy anything too girlie or boyish for baby pae's room. We settled on a gender neutral, but cute color palette based on this crib set (a little splurge for baby Pae). When it came time to purchase a mobile, Roboto was very disappointed by the cheesiness & price tag of everything he saw. Convinced that he could make something better and cheaper, he took me to Joann's Fabrics this weekend, where I was pleasantly surprised to find great matching fabrics.

the paes have adopted the kim tradition of writing down our new years' resolutions, placing them in an envelope and taping it to the end of our 2008 calendar. i (roboto) have come up with ten (genie has eleven, i think). mine include:

be less critical and cynical of others

as a dad, be great in 2008:
be a good dad that prioritizes the family and spends as much quality time w/ jeannie and baby pae as possible

finish wedding album (it's been 2.5 years already!)

target weight 170lbs.

this year i was around 6 for 8 (i failed in the weight-loss and wedding album ones). this year i'm shooting for 100%.

Today is the start of week 27. I am officially in my third (last) trimester. It still hasn't completely hit me that baby Pae will be arriving shortly. Today we took some fun pictures with our matching Superfad (justin's company) track jackets and Dartmouth t-shirts. The t-shirts were coincidental. Justin also wanted to show off his mini pregnant belly that he has gained over the last 6+ months with me. Thanks goodness his belly doesn't compare to mine.

As you can see, we opened up one of our X-mas presents early. Justin says that we needed to open it early to make sure everything was fully functional and that we weren't missing any pieces, so I gave in. It also helped that we were both super excited to receive this present from our baby sister, Suzanne, soon to be "San Francisco Auntie". This was our one splurge (of which we didn't splurge at all, SF Auntie did). It's gender neutral, has a cool design, & got good reviews which Justin likes. Jennifer Garner owns the same one, which Jeannie likes:) This is a picture of Justin with the bassinet. It also comes with a toddler seat too. All it needs is a baby Pae to fill it. we celebrated this momentous occasion by watching a movie about another pregnant lady, Juno. Justin says this is his favorite movie of the year. We actually had a great conversation about the movie after. It comes highly recommended from both the genie & roboto. and HER belly is super cute!

Babies 'R Ugly...

i (roboto), not as a designer, but as a human with functioning eyeballs can't understand why baby products have to be so ugly. strollers, cribs, playards, car seats, diaper bags... they're all designed by... well they're just not designed, simply manufactured. and IF you're able to find a product with a bit of style, be prepared to pay at least double. seriously, why must everything baby-related be pastel-y and plastered with the same ducks and elephants? there's much money to be made by creating affordable, simple, smart baby products.

also, never start your baby registry a week before christmas. in fact, don't go anywhere near a babies 'r us during the months of november or december... and probably january... and any weekend... weekends at babies 'r us suck.

i (roboto) love my commute. it takes me about 20 minutes (door-to-door) to get into work. and on top of that, i get to park my cr-v in an indoor garage (thanks, boss). even though it's a "crossover suv" it's pretty small... it's built off of the honda civic platform afterall... so parking in a compact spot is no biggie... except when my neighbor insists on parking his (her?) hummer next to me.
since when are hummers compact? this isn't even one of those H3s... this is a full-fledged hummer. the dude MUST've realized that one compact space was not appropriate for his monstrosity of a vehicle. is it just me or is that just rude?

actually, alot of things are bothering me recently... which is kinda weird, because i feel like everything seems to be going well in my life...

i dunno... spiritual warfare? seasonal affective disorder? pre-fatherhood stress?

i need help.

this year, though, i can't seem to come up with anything i really want/need. could it be that i've finally accumulated all a guy could ask for? i mean, i love my job (so far)... my wife (and her belly) are happy and healthy... i'm in seattle... my only wish is to sell our chicago house(!).
